The Mercedes Benz G63 Edition 55 | A Rare AMG Gem I Had to Write About

by Jay Washington

Every so often, a car shows up that just demands your attention. The kind you can’t scroll past or forget about. The 2023 Mercedes-Benz G63 Edition 55 is exactly that. I recently had the chance to photograph one for a friend, and the moment I started editing the shots, I realised I was completely hooked.

A Rare Sight in Australia

The Edition 55 is not something you stumble across in Australia. Allocations were extremely limited and Mercedes never released exact numbers for our market which has only added to the mystery. What is known is that only a handful arrived here and demand from collectors was strong from day one. Seeing one in person is a treat in itself and being able to photograph one up close reminded me how few people will ever get that chance.

This Edition 55 can be ordered in Obsidian Black Metallic or G Manufaktur Opalite White Bright two colours that completely change the personality of the G Wagon. The example I photographed was finished beautifully and carried the subtle Edition 55 decals that run low along the sides. They look understated until the light hits the paint then they reveal themselves in a way only AMG could have designed.

The 22 inch forged wheels finished in matt grey pair perfectly with the AMG Night Packages which black out the trim mirrors and grille. The overall look is confident without being loud which is exactly what you want from a limited edition G Wagon that is meant to celebrate history not scream for attention.

Once you climb inside the Edition 55 it becomes obvious that this is no normal G63. The interior is finished in a dramatic blend of black and red Nappa leather and the quality is unmistakable. Carbon fibre trim lines the dash and door panels and every surface feels intentional. Even the Edition 55 branding in the door sills and floor mats adds a sense of pride without looking tacky.

The AMG Performance steering wheel wrapped in Dinamica microfibre feels spot on in the hands. The paddle shifters have a satisfying weight to them and even the stitching throughout the cabin is a reminder that this is a commemorative model created with care. I photograph a lot of cars but some cabins stand out instantly and this one absolutely did.

Under the bonnet the Edition 55 carries the same 4.0 litre twin turbo V8 as the standard G63. It sends 430 kilowatts and 850 newton metres to all four wheels and pushes this big box from zero to one hundred kilometres an hour in roughly 4.5 seconds. It never gets old watching something shaped like a luxury brick launch harder than most sports cars.

The permanent all wheel drive system combined with triple differential locks means this vehicle still keeps its original G Wagon roots. It may have become a luxury icon but it has lost none of its capability. Photographing it off angle through the lens you can see that heritage in the stance. It still looks ready to drive up a mountain even while wearing red leather.

The Story Mercedes Never Told

One thing that surprised me is how quietly Mercedes released the Edition 55. There was no huge global marketing push no dramatic launch event nothing that shouted about it. It simply arrived. For a model celebrating 55 years of AMG you would expect a big announcement but the opposite happened. In a strange way this only makes the Edition 55 more interesting. It feels like a secret among people who truly appreciate the brand and its history.

Because the release was so quiet many owners of regular G63 models do not even know the Edition 55 exists. That makes the handful in Australia even more special. It is not just rare in production numbers it is rare in awareness.

A Future Collectible Without Question

If you asked me whether the Edition 55 will become more sought after in the future the answer is yes without hesitation. Limited AMG models with commemorative significance almost always develop strong long term appeal. Add the fact that the G Wagon already has a cult following in Australia and you have the perfect recipe for a future collectible.

A Bit About Me

For anyone who does not know me outside of photography I run an Australian car buying service called Sell Any Car Fast and I spend my days around everything from daily drivers to prestige and performance cars. So when a friend handed me the keys to this Edition 55 and said take some photos of this I already knew it was something worth documenting.

I also spend a lot of time helping people understand the basics of owning and preparing their cars for sale in Queensland including things like what is involved in a roadworthy certificate and the sort of checks that matter on high end vehicles. Special cars like the Edition 55 make that process even more important because the little details mean everything.

After spending time photographing this 2023 Mercedes Benz G63 Edition 55 I walked away appreciating it more than I expected. It is not just a G Wagon with a few badges. It is a tribute to 55 years of AMG a celebration model created quietly and offered in tiny numbers. It is rare purposeful and beautifully executed and its collectability will only grow with time.

Cars like this remind you why people fall in love with the G Wagon in the first place. Heritage presence craftsmanship and an unmistakable personality that no other luxury SUV can replicate. If you ever get the chance to see an Edition 55 in person take it. If you get the chance to own one you are holding onto something genuinely special.
